I’ve been thinking a lot about fly fishing lately. I haven’t done much since the kids were born; but I think this is the year that David is old enough to begin learning. I took him to New Boston fly fishing last Saturday evening; we wet waded the Piscataqua, caught and released some trout, then cranked the tunes and ate ice cream on the drive back. He used a kid’s style spinning rod and reel instead of a fly rod for the first hour or so we were out there, but a lot of that time he spent “practicing” wading (he got a kick out of falling in), learning where to stand, how to read the water, how to make a clean release (I was grateful to be able to demo this a number of times with some beautiful browns). He also got a chance to try landing a trout on the fly rod after I got one on for him. I think by the end of the summer we’ll have migrated him to a fly rod.
Anyhow, speaking of fly fishing my friend James (we went to grade school together in Vermont) who now works in marketing at Orvis wrote this great sketch to promote their big fly sale. Very funny!
