I recently sat in on a “Ten Secrets of Social Media Marketing” Webinar put on by Awareness (they build social networking platforms) featuring Paul Gillin, who wrote The New Influencers and Secrets of Social Media Marketing. While I won’t reiterate the meat of it here, the 10 points Gillin made are interesting, fairly intuitive and contain some strong common sense wisdom. You can find more on these ideas at his Web site.
- Don’t fear feedback
- Start with the goal, not with the tool.
- Embrace niche markets.
- Empower your people to talk
- Listen before speaking
- Think like a publisher
- Ditch the 13-week campaign
- Put communities to work
- Use the STRAIGHT principle in all communications (Succinct, Transparent, Responsive, Accepting, Insightful, Genuine, Humorous, Timely)
- Reuse and syndicate
