Shroud Magazine scores a distribution deal

A New Hampshire-published dark literary fiction magazine, Shroud, just signed a four-year distribution agreement with Ingram Periodicals.  Great news for Shroud — exciting to see new fiction publications succeeding.  And no, I'm not just happy for these guys because they published one of my stories. But that made me happy, too.  Press release within. Shroud Publishing […]

Top 198 Social Media Sites

Via JD Lasica … SMM Guru (an exercise in futility) has compiled 198 social media sites sorted by niche.   Fascinating.  You could spend a day going through these…or a week  if you were actually trying to set up a profile with each one, or a couple of months if you were really trying to understand the […]

Gebrselassie beats own world record, runs 2:03:59 at Berlin Marathon

Thirty-five-year-old Ethiopian Haile Gebselassie beat his own world record at the Berlin Marathon today.  His former record time was 2:04:26;the new time to beat is 2:03:59.  Holy smokes – that's a 4:44 mile pace! I'd like to be able run one mile that fast!

One week until the Maine marathon, taper update, goal setting

A week from today I am running my first marathon, the Maine Marathon up in Portland.  And in some ways, the end of the training cycle has been the hardest part – much harder than the longest long runs (a couple of 22 milers).  This part is as much psychological and strategic as physical, with some faith […]

Stacking wood, a rainy fall day, the boy is growing up so fast…

I wish I had taken a picture of David helping stack wood today.  Two cords in the rain. Wet, dirty work, and him in a long sleeve T-shirt, soaked and stained in the front from toting wood, a soggy black cap on his head, a big grin on his face as he selected the "just […]

Will Yahoo’s Apt be able to help smaller sites offer higher value ads?

Reading up on the new Yahoo Apt. The ad system could potentially benefit publishers, ad buyers and ad networks by providing streamlined ad buying tools.  It is in testing now with the San Francisco Chronicle and The Mercury News in San Jose, and Yahoo expects to roll it out to other publishers beginning next year. I'll […]

Eugenics in New Orleans?

Hard to believe the NOLA.com report that New Orleans lawmaker State Rep. John Labruzzo really suggested sterilizing the poor — his plan is to offer the poor $1,000 to undergo sterilization while possibly offer tax credits to the educated to reproduce. Archbishop Alfred Hughes said the plan was "an egregious affront to those targeted and blatantly anti-life." […]

Twitter Launches Election Related Tweet Aggregator

Twitter has launched a new site, Election 2008, that filters "hundreds of Twitter updates per minute to create a new source for gathering public opinion about the presidential election and a new way for you to share your thoughts."  According to A VC, "First, and most importantly, you don't have to be a twitter member or user […]

Technorati: Blog a lot, get traffic

TechCrunch has a good summary of what's been released of Technorati's State of the Blogosphere report.  Great interactive charts help summarize the data.  So far we've learned that if you have more than 100,000 unique visitors a month you should be able to make 75K a year.  And that if you blog a lot, you'll […]

Wacky sites that could make millions: It’s just so simple it could work

Saw a reference on Mashable today to UmbrellaToday.com. This site gives me that same feeling as The Million Dollar Homepage did: why didn't we think of that? And why are we working so hard to create deep, rich interesting content and a complex network of sites to deliver local and regional news and advertising?  Except it's not […]
