Last week I was saying to Damon, "Man, you know what I’d like to build? A tool that would allow me to pre-plot and save running routes so I'd know the exact mileage without having to drive them out. That way I could vary my training runs more often. And I could share my routes, and comments on the terrain, type of run, that sort of thing with other runners in the area or with people who might be traveling, and they'd enter and share theirs." Damon may not be all that interested in my training regimen (which I can see would be boring for most people who are not running themselves), but he is deeply interested in the sort of Web apps and social network tools represented by this idea – so we had a good discussion about this, after which I filed it in my "look into this when time permits file." Of course someone has already built this – and it's even better than the back of the envelope version I was sketching. MapMyRun.com allows you to plot and save maps and view in street level, satellite or topo, calculates distance, allows you to share maps and make them searchable based on all kinds of datafields that relate to the type of run it is, and to track training, including mileage, sneaker mileage, weight, sleep, calorie intake and more. You can generate custom reports based on all of this info – or generate an RSS feed! Overall, a fantastic app for runners, walkers and cyclists… You can also share maps on your blog, etc. An example – here’s the 5.99 mile run I do on my lunch breaks at the office…
