Sad to hear Norman Mailer has died. While it may be a bit contradictory to say so, I never managed to get around to reading everything Mailer wrote, nor did I like everything of his did read, yet he was one of my all-time favorite writers, and certainly one of the most influential (along with Hemingway) on my early explorations and imitations of style as I looked for my own. The first book I ever read by Mailer was "Tough Guys Don't Dance" and more than 20 years on, the phantoms Mailer evoked still wash any of my considerations of the Cape with a supernatural patina.
