Sent back a signed contract today to Jack Scovil at Scovil Chichak Galen Literary Agency, who has agreed to handle SLATE. Seems that I’ve been working on that novel for so long now (I finished the fourth draft more than a year ago), and working on some novel or another for as long as I can remember, that this heretofore unattained position, that of being "represented", while not a guarantee of either commercial or critical literary fame, still feels like a giddy height, a dizzying pinnacle, a lovely moment that vindicates somehow the years of hours stolen from sleep and socializing and dedicated to making up stories. Kris’ mom bought me a fine bottle of single malt when she heard the news, and I had a nice toast to celebrate while I signed the document and sealed the envelope last night. And as long as I’m toasting, here at the long-awaited arrival at this next step, here’s to my friend the fine historical novelist who read SLATE and liked it enough to recommend it to his agent, and to all of the friends and family who put up with me asking them to read (or worse, listen to me read alound!) some bit of a novel, or a short story, or an essay, or bit of experimental doggerel — especially Kristen, who suffers through every single draft of every story and gives me patient and good advice after each one. Salud.

Congratulations on the contract. I hope your novel finds its way into print quickly so I can read it.
